What we do

Our mission is to give every child in Aotearoa the chance to experience growing and preparing their own food, many for the first time, so they too can benefit from these essential life skills. The knowledge and skills that Kiwi kids learn through Garden to Table have a transformative and lifelong impact on their hauora (wellbeing) and on their connection with nature.

School Principals tell us that Garden to Table improves both health and education outcomes for their students. Our staff create Garden to Table resources and facilitate training and support for educators who deliver the programme in schools.

GARDEN TO TABLE 2022

Year 3-6 students participate in Garden to Table.

Each class has 1 lesson each fortnight.

Terms 1 & 3 = Rooms 1, 2, 3, 16, 18 & 25

Terms 2 & 4 = Rooms 8, 17, 19, 20, 23 & 24

LESSON 1, TERM 1

Learning Goals

Kitchen - getting to know the kitchen and showing respect in the kitchen

(care for the kitchen, staying safe e.g. using knives).

Garden - getting to know our garden, staying safe - what to wear (closed

shoes, hat, sunscreen) and using the garden tools safely.

Recipe - Passion Fruit Juice

Equipment - large bowl, cutting board, blender, knife, measuring jug, 2 tea spoons, strainer, cups.

Ingredients - 5 ripe passion fruit

1 tablespoon sugar

1 or 2 teaspoons of sun quick juice

Mint leaves

Ice cubes

Method

1. Cut the passion fruit into halves and then scoop out the pulp into a bowl

2. Mix sun quick juice into the bowl and add sugar.

3. Pour the mixture into the blender and add 1 litre of water.

4. Strain the juice into the jug or bowl and put some ice cubes in it.

5. Serve in cups while garnishing it with mint leaves.
